The Family as a System

Each family is very different and they all have different systems that makes them work or in some cases not work. Within each of these systems there are rules, like in my family we weren’t allowed to get a cell phone until we were 14 and when we were older we had a curfew of midnight. These rules might have seemed outrageous at the time but these were put in place to make sure my siblings and I would know how to follow rules and make sure we are safe.
There are many family systems that work for that family and only that family, it is hard for others to see how a family works without either being close to that family or being in it. Throughout history parent have used negative feedback while punishing their kids like if their kid does something that they don’t like, instead of correcting the behavior. More parents need to use positive reinforcement to ensure the good behavior that the kids are doing rather than the opposite.
We need to be more mindful of the different kinds of family systems that there may be and we must try and help those who might be struggling with the rules that they implement on their kids.
